The biggest sand dunes in the Wolrd
Situated in the largest conservation area in Africa (Namib-Naukluft National Park), Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia’s most spectacular and best known attraction. Characterized by the large red dunes surrounding it, Sossusvlei is a large white, salty, clay pan and is a great destination all year round. The dunes in this area are some of the highest in the world, reaching almost 400 meters, and provide photographic enthusiasts with beautiful images in the beautiful light of morning and night.
Sossusvlei literally translates to “dead-end swamp” as it is where the dunes come together, preventing the Tsauchab River from flowing over 60km to the Atlantic Ocean. However, due to drought conditions in the Namib Desert, the river rarely flows here and the pan remains dry for many years. During an exceptional rainy season, the Tsauchab fills the pan, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness this spectacular spot. Photography enthusiasts are rewarded with a glassy “lake” with reflections of the surrounding dunes. When the pan fills, it may contain water all year round.
